Song/Video review from The Joy of Violent Movement

"The album’s latest single “Anyone But Me” is an interesting song because it’s kind of a passive aggressive tell off and a bit of an admittance by the song’s narrator that they may be too much of a problem to deal with – it’s in a certain way a song from the perspective of a heartbroken loner, who’s a bit of a fuck up. But more important, the song is a loose, boozy song full of piss, vinegar, vitriol and regret, thundering drums, layers of blistering guitar and Howe’s anguished vocals. Interestingly, pay attention to the song’s structure – there isn’t a discernible chorus or a hook; in fact, the song is comprised more along the lines of an A,B,A structure with segments held together by the tight rhythm section.


Recently, the band released a lyric video for the song which features the band’s frontperson Corey Howe, sitting on a backyard bench insouciantly smoking to the song and its lyrics. At one point, Howe is sitting on the bench in a dress, drinking tea or coffee and smoking before returning to stare directly into the camera. It’s weird but it’s actually much more original than just seeing lyrics thrown out on to the screen without anything behind it."

"ANYONE BUT ME" (LYRIC VIDEO) RELEASED! via DIFFUSER!

"Hailing from the great state of Texas, Dead Flowers are gearing up for an expansive U.S. tour set to kick off this Saturday (April 18). Still celebrating the release of their sophomore LP, His Blues, Dead Flowers are ready to meet and make new fans across the states, and today (April 14), Diffuser is thrilled to help them do that with the premiere of a brand-new lyric video; check out “Anyone But Me” in the video above.

“We wanted to make a video that showcased the lyrics and didn’t just have an album cover in the background,” frontman Corey Howe tells us. “We also didn’t want to take away from the song itself. The video is simple, but in a good way — you have to keep watching to see if something will happen! It’s like ‘Bastards of Young’ meets ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’!”

“Anyone But Me” is the second-to-last track on His Blues, an album that showcases Dead Flowers’ compelling garage rock sound, one that is simultaneously gritty and pristine. His Blues follows the band’s 2013 debut, For You. Both records are out via Idol Records; you can find more information here.

Comprised of Corey Howe (vocals, guitar), Vince Tuley (guitar), Evan Johnson (bass) and Ed Chaney (drums), the Dallas, TX-based quartet Dead Flowers have developed a reputation both locally and regionally for a boozy, bluesy rock sound that owes a debt to The Shouting Matches, Them Crooked Vultures, The Black Keys and others – and perhaps more important, for a live sound that hews closely to their recorded sound. As Howe mentions in an interview with Central Track, “if you don’t see an instrument onstage during one of the Dead Flowers’ live performances, you’re not going to hear it on their record either.” 

And as a result, within a year of the release of the band’s debut, For You, the quartet opened for the likes of nationally known acts, Delta Spirit, J Roddy Walston and The Business, Murder City Devils, Reverend Horton Heat and The Whigs. Their latest effort, His Blues may put the Dallas, TX-based quartet on the national map – especially since they’ll be embarking on a national tour during April and May, which will include a May 16 stop at Piano’s. 

Recently, the band performed a loose, whiskey soaked, Southern blues song “I Won’t Go” on The Chevy Music Showcase – in other words, be prepared for twangy, power chords, lyrics howled in soulful pain and thundering drums that sounds warmly familiar with a soulful, earnest, grittiness at its heart.
